The Fall of Rome, Apocalyptic Elements and Perception of the End Times in Augustine's De civitate Dei

Abstract

In this study, an analysis of Augustine's perspectives on the end times is undertaken, particularly focusing on his insights within the last three chapters of 'De Civitate Dei'. The objective is to plumb the depths of his approach to the concept of the end times. To achieve this, the historical, theological, and societal contexts of Augustine's views are thoroughly scrutinized. While Augustine contends that certain biblical passages concerning the end times should not be interpreted simplistically and literally, he also highlights the symbolic significance inherent in these texts. This analysis draws from his correspondence with contemporary clergy, wherein the basis for Augustine's dissent against the end-times expectations of some Christians is explored. Another pivotal focus of this study lies in the resurrection of the body and the concept of the millennial reign. This interpretation is supported by relevant New Testament passages. Additionally, Augustine discuss the Book of Revelation attributed to John, which serves as the foundational source of the doctrine of dual resurrection. In conclusion, it is evident that millenarian expectations have maintained popularity throughout history. These expectations are intertwined with human concerns about the impending end of the world. Given that biblical texts allow for the possibility of "millenarianism," these expectations are poised to endure in contemporary times and beyond.

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Augustinus'un (ö. 430) ahir zamanla ilgili görüşleri ve özellikle De civitate Dei adlı eserinin son üç bölümündeki düşünceleri analiz edilmektedir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda Augustinus'un konu ile ilgili görüşlerinin tarihsel, teolojik ve toplumsal bağlamları incelenmiştir. Augustinus, ahir zamanla ilgili olarak Kutsal Kitap'ta geçen bazı metinlerin basit ve doğrudan yorumlanmaması gerektiğini savunurken, aynı zamanda bu metinlerin sembolik anlamlarının da altını çizmektedir. Bunu yaparken dönemin din adamları ile yapmış olduğu yazışmalar baz alınmış ve bu yazışmalar neticesinde ahir zaman beklentisine sahip olan Hıristiyanların görüşlerinin Augustinus tarafından hangi gerekçelerle kabul edilmediği incelemeye konu edilmiştir. Çalışmanın bir diğer odak noktası, bedenin dirilişi ve bin yıllık hükümdarlık kavramlarıdır. Augustinus, bin yıllık hükümdarlık kavramının sembolik bir anlam taşıdığını öne sürmektedir. Bu yorumları yaparken Yeni Ahit'teki ilgili metinlere başvuran Augustinus, daha sonra çifte diriliş öğretisinin asıl kaynağı olan Yuhanna'nın Vahiy kitabını tartışmaktadır. Neticede binyılcı beklentilerin, tarihin her döneminde popüler olduğu ve bu beklentilerin, insanların dünyanın sonuna dair endişeleri ile ilişkilendirildiği görülmektedir. Bu nedenle Kutsal Kitap metinlerinin, "binyılcılığın" sürekli bir olasılık olarak görülmesine izin verdiği hesaba katıldığında, bu beklentilerin günümüzde ve gelecekte de popülerliğini koruyacağı anlaşılmaktadır.
